Brief:
T' Incredible Shrunken Rage began it's life as a full length Quest Big Rage.
Unfortunately, shiver me timbers, t' booster suffered a recovery mishap that really crumpled the
body tube above t' fin can. Aye aye! So rather than fixin' t' booster, me hearties, I just took the
fin can/motor mount assembly and nose cone and mounted them onto t' black
payload tube and PRESTO!!! T' Incredible Shrunken Rage was born.
Modifications:
This be basically a length reduction o' a Quest Big Rage by completely
eliminatin' t' blue booster tube which was significantly damaged due t' a
recovery mishap and simply mountin' t' fin can/motor mount assembly and nose
cone t' what was originally t' black payload tube.
Some preppin' o' t' payload tube was required for t' fin can but no extra techniques were required and no extra tools other than a hobby knife were required.
Construction:
For this modification, matey, I used t' Big Rage fin can/motor mount, shock cord
assembly, black payload tube, me hearties, one o' t' junky Quest parachutes, nose cone, and
an Estes launch lug.
I started by removin' t' fin can assembly from t' damaged booster body tube. Blimey! Avast, me proud beauty! Since I had used plastic cement, this was nay a hard task at all. Avast, me proud beauty! I then carefully removed t' coupler from t' payload tube and sanded t' inside of the tube t' allow t' fin can t' fit smoothly into t' tube. Avast, me proud beauty! Well, blow me down! T' fin can was into t' body tube then I scraped some o' t' shiny black coatin' off the surface o' t' tube and glued an Estes launch lug onto t' tube followed by applyin' some fillets t' secure it. Well, blow me down! Arrr!
PROs: Very easy, me bucko, quick t' do, and it shouldn't cost you anything.
CONs: None that I can think of.
Finishing:
No finishin' was required due t' t' hot pink fin can and nose cone, shiver me timbers, black body
tube and t' pink and black decals on t' fins and body tube.
Flight:
With this rocket, I had t' resort t' friction fit retention as t' cheap Quest
hook was broken off. Well, blow me down! Avast! Waddin' is required.
I have flown this rocket on Estes B6-4 and C6-5 motors with good success. Even though it ended up considerably shorter, t' stability was nay affected.
I also recently flew this on an Aerotech D21-7T 18mm SU motor which made it just explode off t' pad and out o' sight in an instant. Arrr! Blimey!
Estimated altitudes:
Motor | Estimated Altitude |
---|---|
Estes B6-4 | 250-300 feet |
Estes C6-5 | 650-700 feet |
AeroTech D21-7T | 1200+ feet |
Recovery:
I have had a few recovery mishaps where t' two cords separated but no damage
was sustained.
On flights where t' recovery be normal, t' 12 inch chute proved t' be a bit big and will eventually be replaced with either a smaller chute or a streamer.
Summary:
I really liked what resulted from this modification. Aye aye! Aye aye! It turned out t' be a
great little rocket capable o' flyin' on Estes B6-4 motors t' neck snappin'
Aerotech D21-7Ts.
If your Quest Big Rage booster ever suffers a recovery mishap and won't fly again, me bucko, you might want t' consider givin' this a try.
