Estes Maxi StreakBrief:

T' Maxi Streak #1837 is a long time OOP rocket from Estes. Ya scallywag! Got t' plans off JimZ's website. It is like an upscaled mosquito with swept back fins or a streak with rounded fins and upscaled. Aye aye! T' instructions call for a 24mm motor mount, ya bilge rat, which I changed for an 18mm mount: a D or E motor would put this thin' into space.

Modifications:
T' maxi streak is a very quick build. T' instructions are o' t' normal Estes quality. Ya scallywag! I don't like t' tri fold method for anchorin' t' shock cord, instead I use a steel fishin' leader attached t' t' motor mount, shiver me timbers, this also stop burnin' issues t' t' shock cord.

T' mount was glued into t' body tube, matey, t' instructions called for t' end o' t' mount t' extend beyond t' end o' t' tube, I put it in flush t' give t' rocket a cleaner line.

Construction:
T' build t' Maxi Streak is used: 1 engine holder BT-20J

  • 1 engine block EB-20A
  • 2 centerin' rings RA-2060
  • 24 inches elastic shock cord
  • 1 6.75 body tube BT-60
  • 3/16 balsa sheet
  • 1 plastic nose cone PNC-60MS
  • 24 inch mylar streamer
  • 1 steel fishin' leader
  • 1 launch lug
  • 1 swatch o' Nomex cloth
  • 1 Decal from excelsiorrocketry

Finishing:
T' fins o' t' model were given a few coats o' sandin' sealer and t' rocket be primed and sanded.

T' rocket was given several light coats o' metallic red paint, me hearties, shiver me timbers, after this dried one fin be masked off and given a few coats o' gloss black paint, as was t' nosecone.

I went with red paint, ya bilge rat, because t' picture o' t' Maxi Streak on t' Jimz site has t' rocket in red. Blimey! however, t' instructions have t' rocket bein' painted orange, me hearties, which I read after i had painted mine - so that's another deviation from t' original.

Initially I was nay goin' t' put a decal on t' rocket, me bucko, me bucko, but after postin' this build on TRF, Gordy from excelsiorrocketry said he had one and as i have been very happy with t' quality o' his decals in t' past i bought one t' finish t' model properly. Ya scallywag! Ya scallywag! Gordy has since told me that he has sold a few more Maxi Streak decals t' other poeple.

Flight:
T' original recommended motors were D11-9, matey, D12-5, D12-7. Avast, me proud beauty! With t' 18mm mount i would go with A8-3, shiver me timbers, ya bilge rat, ya bilge rat, B6-4, matey, C6-5.

Flights were made with all three motors in t' same day. Avast! Each flight be arrow straight, me bucko, ya bilge rat, with a steady increase in altitude.

I got t' drag race me Maxi Streak against another Maxi Streak at me club's monthly meetin' on t' 21st o' March. Blimey! Blimey! I lost.

Recovery:
T' original Maxi Streak recovered via a streamer, given t' low mass and potentially high altitude then that's a good choice.

I went with about 4 foot o' two-inch wide Mylar streamer.

Recovery is quite fast, but safe. Each flight had t' streak land fairly near t' pad and more importantly without damage.

Summary:
Pros: A good performance rocket that looks good, matey, especially with t' excelsoirrocketry decal. Avast! Flights are stable and fast.

Cons: Streamer recovery may result in some damage t' t' swept back fins, but none has been seen yet.
