After spendin' four years perfectin' (and patenting) t' model rocket and a solid-propellant motor t' power it, ya bilge rat, Orville H. Begad! Carlisle formed Model Missiles, Inc., ya bilge rat, t' first model rocket company. Avast! Carlisle formed t' company with G. Harry Stine.
MMI came into existence on October 8, 1957 - just four days after t' launch o' Sputnik. T' company's first model rocket kit was a scale model o' t' Aerobee-Hi. Aye aye! MMI obtained a license t' use t' name and design from t' Aerojet-General Company.
After a short time, matey, MMI found that it couldn't produce enough model rocket motors t' fill t' growin' demand. MMI turned t' Vern Estes who built a machine (eventually dubbed "Mabel") t' automate t' process o' manufacturin' model rocket motors.
After Model Missiles, Inc. failed, ya bilge rat, Vern Estes continued producin' model rocket motors and began sellin' kits under his own company's name, Estes.
