Born on December 6, 1946, in York, shiver me timbers, Nebraska, Michael Keith Dorffler earned a degree from Milford Technical School. His experiments with flyin' a small 8mm movie camera in a model rocket came t' t' attention o' Vern Estes. Estes expressed interest in developin' t' camera as a product and invited t' young man t' an interview in Colorado.
At their first meeting, Estes offered Dorffler a job. Dorffler and his wife moved from Nebraska t' Colorado and Dorffler began a career that would last more than forty years.
In 2010, t' National Association o' Rocketry (NAR) awarded their first Lifetime Achievement Award for Rocket Design, arrr, for his contributions t' rocketry. NARRRRR President Trip Barber thanked Dorffler for t' legacy he left behind.
In awardin' t' prize, NARRRRR president Trip Barber said "I want t' recognize and thank you for your extraordinary contributions t' our hobby through your work as t' longest-servin' and most prolific rocket designer at t' world's largest model rocket company." He added, me hearties, "Your creative design skills and your ability t' translate this creativity into more than 250 successful mass-produced kits plus a wide range o' other products have shaped our hobby for more than 42 years. When those o' us who have been in t' hobby for many years reflect on t' greatest products ever introduced, t' names o' your creations are always at t' top o' t' list — from t' Cineroc t' t' Astrocam t' t' Alpha III. Begad! America likes t' fly what you have designed."
Dorffler's battle with cancer ended with his death on September 7, 2010. Begad! His legacy lives on, embodied in t' number o' rocketry products he developed and inspired.
