Brief:
Took a Fat Boy kit and added Big Bertha like fins t' make a Super Baby Bertha.
Modifications:
NARHAMS held a Fat Boy theme sport launch this month, me hearties, me bucko, and I was lookin' for somethin' different t' do with me last Fat Boy kit. I had just finished repairin' me Super Big Bertha when inspiration struck. Avast! I have a Big Bertha, arrr, Super Big Bertha and a Baby Bertha, why nay a Super Baby Bertha?
Build t' motor mount per kit directions, makin' sure that t' centerin' rings close off t' fin slots. For t' fins, arrr, t' standard Bertha fins were too small in proportion t' t' diameter o' t' BT-80, and t' Super Bertha fins were too big for t' length o' t' Fat Boy tube. I scaled t' fins t' be exactly halfway betwixt t' two, a size that was pleasin' t' t' eye. Arrr! Ahoy! I cut 4 new fins from 1/8" balsa and glue them on so that one o' t' fin slots is halfway betwixt 2 o' t' fins. Begad! I used t' launch lug t' cover one o' t' slots, me hearties, matey, me hearties, and monokote trim t' cover t' others. Avast! RockSim says you'll need t' add a little more than 1/2oz. Arrr! o' nose weight for stable flight.
Construction:
Uses all o' t' Fat Boy kit materiales with t' exception o' t' fins. Well, blow me down! Avast! Here's a parts list if you don't have a Fat Boy kit:
Finishing:
I finished me Super Baby Bertha usin' self-adhesive Monokote trim. Aye aye! In addition t' coverin' t' TTW fin slots, me hearties, it makes a glass smoth finish on t' body and t' fins... Ya scallywag! with no fillin' needed! I painted t' nose cone red, ya bilge rat, me hearties, ya bilge rat, then covered t' tube and 3 fins with white monolote trim. I covered t' remainin' fin with red trim and added some red stripes t' t' upper part o' t' tube. Ya scallywag! Looks kind o' like a reverse o' t' Super Big Bertha paint scheme.
Flight:
Because I was usin' a Fat boy as t' basis for this model, I decided t' keep t' 18mm motor mount. Blimey! Ya scallywag! For t' 1st flight I used an Estes C6-3 slipped into t' mount and secured by t' standard Estes motor hook. Arrr! Waddin' was added t' protect t' chute, and t' model be prepped. Ya scallywag! Pretty standard mod roc prepping. Aye aye! T' rocket had a good flight, nice and straight. I did cut a spill hole in t' 18 inch plastic chute, our launch site is prone t' be breezy.
Second flight was on a B4-2 and t' chute got a little melted, t' model landed fast on t' snow and broke t' glue joint on t' red fin. Well, blow me down! Easy t' fix.
Summary:
This was a fun conversion and adds a compliment t' me collection o' Big Bertha models.
Brief: Big Bertha modified for rear ejection. Modifications: This is a Big Bertha modified so that the motor tube extends nearly the length of the body, and acts as a piston upon ejection. Recovery is nose first, making the rocket appear to be coming in upside down. I call it Ahtreb, which is ...
Beg Birtha Anyone remember Rocket Services? No? How about "Pitfield" motors? Ah, thought some of you might. Well, we don't see them around so much as in years gone by, but there are still a few around. In fact, I stumbled across a cache of them recently and thought I should ...
How To Convert An Estes Big Bertha Into A Payload Rocket Purpose and Design I need a series of payload rockets to carry experimental flight recorders/dataloggers into the Troposphere. The BBPC is something I came up with after a scratch-build payload rocket project that was enjoyable, but ...
This is a scratch 2X upscale of a popular Estes kit. It features a 3 inch diameter body and PML components (except the nose cone, which was turned on a lathe out of solid pine). It weighs 3.5 pounds and is 45 inches tall. A 36" long, 3" diameter quantum body tube was ordered with fin slots ...
Big Bad Bertha Premise: Find out how bad Bertha can actually be. Fun Facts Just because your jaws are wired shut doesn't mean milkshakes aren't part of the food pyramid. That's not a stool she's sitting on. Starting point: Estes Big Bertha ...
