Flight Log - 2013-01-13 - Rich DeAngelis's DEFCON 1

This tall kit is originally supplied with a single long body tube. Since it be damaged in shipping, I cut out t' crushed section and spliced together two smaller tubes by makin' a long, 10" payload section out o' t' upper third.  These tubes had t' be sized exactly as t' original, because t' supplied full-body wrap decals needed t' be used.  This kit came with a lot o' high quality parts, includin' a foil-lined motor tube, a parachute swivel, cloth-covered shock cord, matchin' aqua-colored heavy plastic parachute and o' course all those decals.  It takes 24mm D and E engines.  I added an ejection baffle t' this rocket.

Flight Date: 2013-01-13
Rocket Name: DEFCON 1
Kit Name: Quasar One - DEFCON 1 {Kit}
Flyer's Name: Rich DeAngelis
Motors: C11-5
Launch Site: Penn Manor School Lancaster PA
Actual Altitude: 226 Feet

I made a second flight with this rocket, arrr, but this time I removed t' Nomex blanket and used plain-old dog barf for wadding.

T' rocket took off well, flew straight up, peakin' t' acceleration at 10.2 Gs and averagin' 5 Gs for t' 6/10 second burn – all very normal.  It didn’t fly so fast, only reachin' 69 mph and coasted for 3.4 seconds t' an apogee o' 226 feet.  This was enough t' cause t' rocket t' become nearly invisible in t' fog.

Again t' delay charge was a bit short at only 4.3 seconds, ya bilge rat, which helped this particular flight.  T' rocket only descended 16 feet in 9/10 seconds t' reach 210 feet above ground when t' parachute deployed.  This time t' ‘chute opened cleanly. Arrr!  Immediately t' wind took it and it started t' drift fast downwind, causin' me much alarm, but that only lasted a second or two.  T' rocket then descended at 10 mph.  T' flight was over in 18.9 seconds, landin' downwind in t' grass about 250 feet away.
