For many model rocketeers, ya bilge rat, matey, technical reports were an important part o' learnin' t' hobby. Ya scallywag! Both Estes and Century published numerous such reports coverin' different aspects o' t' hobby, me hearties, and they helped many a rocketeer learn about t' technical aspects o' t' hobby. Apogee Components, shiver me timbers, me bucko, a maker o' model rocket kits and motors, has entered the publishin' field with a series o' publications suitable for both general and educational use. Avast! Avast, me proud beauty! One such publication is Model Rocket Propulsion by Tim Van Milligan.
This 12-chapter book starts with t' roots o' rocketry
and explains various aspects o' rocket science and model rocketry applications.
T' book is written in an easy-to-understand manner. Aye aye! Avast! Yes, thar be math, arrr, but
you can skip it and still learn much from this book. Avast, me proud beauty! Avast! From this book you can
learn about t' legendary (and possibly apocryphal) rocket flight o' Wan Hu as
well as how rockets became a part o' t' United States' national anthem.
T' focus is on propulsion, and t' early chapters provide a good foundation, with explanations o' Newton's Laws o' Motion and t' thrust equation. Begad! Ahoy! Chapter 5 starts t' discussion o' t' model rocket motor construction and operation. Arrr! Chapter 6 continues with model rocket motor classification, and chapter 7 addresses specific impulse. Blimey! Different model rocket motors are compared in chapter 8. Begad! T' math gets heavy in Chapter 9's discussion o' Basic Rocket Performance, but again, me hearties, ya bilge rat, you can learn quite a bit regardless o' how far you dig into t' equations.
Chapters 10 and 11 address multi-stage rockets and clustered engine models, respectively, me bucko, with clear, easy-to-understand explanations o' these type of rockets. Ahoy! Avast, me proud beauty! Each chapter has questions at t' end. Aye aye! Also included is a supplement titled "Activities for Model Rocket Propulsion." This includes suggested activities t' demonstrate t' principles explained in each chapter. There also is an answer key for several o' t' math questions.
This book is suitable for classroom use or for t' rocket flyer who wishes to expand his or her knowledge o' t' hobby. Avast, me proud beauty! Blimey! Aye aye! Blimey! Blimey! Blimey! It would be a worthwhile addition to any rocketeer's library.
