ASP Kappa-9-M (24mm version)

Brief:
24mm scale model version o' an early Japanese soundin' rocket.

Construction:
T' parts list:

  • 1 BT-60 "booster" tube
  • 1 BT-50 "sustainer" payload section
  • 1 BT-50/60 balsa transition
  • 1 balsa nose cone
  • laser cut fins

There's nay much t' add t' t' previous review o' t' 3x18mm cluster version o' this rocket because it's t' same rocket. Ahoy! T' only difference be t' 24mm engine tube and hook instead o' t' cluster MMT. Begad! Blimey! T' review covered t' main points.

You can have t' nose cone friction fit and leave a workin' payload section. Begad! I chose t' follow t' directions and paint over it for t' better scale result.

Finishing:
How one finishes this rocket is optional. Begad! Blimey! Finishin' it with t' scale paint scheme is a challenge. Blimey! Well, blow me down! T' main color is aluminum (flat silver). T' transition and t' top o' t' payload section are chrome (shiny silver). T' stripes are fluorescent orange (exact dimension are in t' instructions).

Metal paints is very difficult t' mask and nay mar. Begad! Painter's tape is better than maskin' tape. Begad! By far t' best way t' keep from messin' up t' previous metal layer is t' let it dry. I'm talkin' a week o' curin' and dryin' undisturbed. After nay doin' this and doin' lots o' sanding, I took it slow and painted it over an almost 3 weeks time period. Begad! T' results were worth it. Ahoy! It's t' first scale model I can honestly say I'm proud o' t' way it turned out. Arrr! Ahoy! Blimey! O' course, arrr, this had nothin' t' do with ASP's design.

ASP Kappa-9-M (24mm version)

Flight:
Flights have been on E9s (4, 6 and 8 second delays) usin' cellulose wadding. Well, blow me down! Flights are invariably great and often draw comments. For a scale bird, this is a real performer. Aye aye! Ya scallywag! Apogee on E9s is about 6 seconds but any o' these delays work fine.

Recovery:
Due t' an extra long shock cord, thar's no bumpin' o' t' long payload section against t' main body durin' descent. Arrr! I use a 12" nylon X-form chute and it brings it back a little fast but close t' t' pad.

Flight Rating: 5 out o' 5

Summary:
Gettin' t' exact paint scheme is difficult, but I won't rate ASP or t' kit down for that. Aye aye! I do think it's worth takin' t' time and doin' right.

As for direct comparison betwixt this and t' 3x18mm version, matey, me hearties, I have plans for a drag race betwixt mine and a friend's cluster version. Begad! I'll post t' results after we fly.

Overall Rating: 5 out o' 5

( Contributed - by Andrew Bronfein) When I received the Kappa 9m it was the first ASP product I had ever seen so I really didn't know what to expect. I opened the simple plastic bag type packaging and immediately was amazed at the quality of the parts used in the kit. The nose cone and transition section are balsa, one thing I haven't seen in a good long while since most manufactu ...
